When your doctor orders an MRI, you want accurate results, experienced interpretation, and a comfortable experience. RAVE Radiology’s Sarasota location delivers all three. We combine state-of-the-art 1.5 Tesla MRI technology with the expertise of board-certified, fellowship-trained radiologists who specialize in interpreting complex imaging studies.
Located at 3501 Cattlemen Road in the heart of Sarasota’s medical district, our facility serves patients throughout Sarasota County, from Downtown Sarasota and Lakewood Ranch to Siesta Key and surrounding communities. We understand that getting an MRI can feel overwhelming, which is why our experienced team is dedicated to making your experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible.
What Sets RAVE Apart:
Board-Certified Radiologist Team – Every MRI scan is read by our team of eight board-certified radiologists, many with subspecialty fellowship training in neuroradiology, musculoskeletal imaging, and body imaging.

What To Expect During Your MRI
Understanding what happens during your MRI appointment helps
reduce anxiety and ensures the best possible results.
Before Your Appointment:
When you call to schedule, we’ll verify your insurance coverage, ask about your medical history and any implanted devices, and provide specific preparation instructions. Most MRI exams require a physician’s order. For most exams, you can eat and drink normally and take your regular medications. Arrive 15 minutes early for registration.
What to Bring:
Photo ID
Insurance card
Physician order (if you have one)
List of current medications
Co-pay or payment method
During Your Appointment:
You’ll complete a safety questionnaire about implanted devices and metal objects. Our experienced MRI technologists will explain the procedure, answer questions, and ensure your comfort. You’ll change into a gown and remove all metal items.
The Scan:
Most MRI scans take 30-60 minutes depending on the body part:
Brain MRI: 30-45 minutes
Spine MRI: 30-45 minutes
Joint MRI: 30-40 minutes
Abdominal MRI: 45-60 minutes
The MRI makes loud knocking and buzzing sounds (we provide headphones or earplugs). Staying perfectly still is critical for clear images. Your technologist can see and hear you at all times via two-way communication.
Comfort Features:
Music during your scan
Padded positioning
Panic button (you’re always in control)
Soft lighting
Steady airflow
After Your MRI:
Resume normal activities immediately. Your images are typically interpreted within 24 hours, with results sent directly to your referring physician. You can access your images and reports through our secure patient portal. For urgent findings, our radiologist contacts your doctor the same day.
MRI With Contrast
Understanding Contrast Enhancement
Some MRI exams require intravenous contrast material (gadolinium) to improve diagnostic accuracy. Contrast helps highlight blood vessels, differentiate normal from abnormal tissues, and improve tumor detection.
When Contrast Is Needed:
Your doctor may order contrast for brain MRI (tumor detection, MS imaging), spine MRI (infection, tumor evaluation), breast MRI (almost always requires contrast), abdominal MRI (liver lesions, kidney tumors), and MRA vascular studies.
Safety:
Gadolinium contrast is very safe with few side effects. Most patients feel nothing or a brief cool sensation. Serious reactions are extremely rare. Contrast is avoided in patients with severe kidney disease (eGFR <30) and generally avoided during pregnancy.
We use the latest “macrocyclic” gadolinium agents with lower retention profiles.
Frequently Asked Questions
About MRI at RAVE Sarasota
“I’m Claustrophobic. Can I Still Get an MRI?”
Absolutely! Last month, a patient from Lakewood Ranch came to us after canceling her MRI appointment at another facility twice due to severe claustrophobia. She was terrified but needed the scan to diagnose her ongoing headaches. Our technologist, Maria, spent 10 minutes walking her through the scanner, showed her the wide opening, let her listen to music options, and explained she could do the scan feet-first. The patient completed her brain MRI without any issues and later told us it wasn’t nearly as bad as she’d imagined.
Our wide-bore design features a 70cm opening (significantly wider than conventional scanners), many exams can be performed feet-first, we offer music and relaxation techniques, and breaks are available when needed. Over 95% of anxious patients successfully complete their scans.
“Is MRI Safe?”
Yes! MRI is one of the safest medical imaging procedures available. Unlike X-rays and CT scans, MRI uses no ionizing radiation. It uses a magnetic field, radiofrequency waves, and computer processing—none involve radiation exposure.
Most modern implants (hip/knee replacements, surgical clips) are MRI-safe. Many pacemakers and ICDs are MRI-conditional with specific protocols. Always inform us of any implants so we can verify safety.
There’s no limit on how many MRIs you can safely have.
“How Much Does an MRI Cost?”
I believe you deserve to know costs upfront. We offer transparent pricing and verify insurance coverage before your appointment.
Insurance Patients: We accept Medicare, Medicaid, Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, Aetna, Cigna, Humana, and many more. We’ll verify your coverage and provide a cost estimate before your appointment so there are no surprises.
Self-Pay Patients: We offer competitive self-pay rates for patients without insurance or those choosing not to use insurance. Our independent facility often costs significantly less than hospital-based MRI centers while providing the same quality technology and expert radiologist interpretation.
Call us at 941-488-7781 for a personalized price quote based on your specific MRI type and insurance status. We’ll give you exact pricing information upfront.

MRI Vs Other Imaging
MRI vs CT Scan vs X-Ray
Different imaging tests excel at visualizing different structures.
MRI is best for:
Soft tissues (brain, muscles, tendons), joint cartilage, tumors, neurological conditions, and detailed organ imaging. Advantages include no radiation, superior soft tissue contrast, and excellent for brain and spine.
CT Scan is best for:
Bone fractures, chest/lung imaging, emergency trauma, and calcium deposits. It’s very fast (5-10 minutes) but uses radiation.
X-Ray is best for:
Bone fractures, lung diseases, and joint arthritis. It’s the fastest and least expensive but provides limited soft tissue detail.
Your physician determines the most appropriate imaging based on your symptoms and what needs to be evaluated.
