Advanced Breast Imaging
at RAVE Sarasota

Every mammogram at RAVE Sarasota is more than just a screening. It’s a chance to catch something early, when options are widest and outcomes are best. We use Hologic’s 3D tomosynthesis system with SmartCurve breast stabilisation technology — delivering sharper images than traditional 2D mammography while significantly reducing discomfort during compression.

Pain is the number one reason women skip or delay mammograms. SmartCurve’s curved paddle matches the natural shape of the breast, distributing pressure more evenly. Clinical studies show it reduces reported pain significantly compared to standard flat paddles. Most women are genuinely surprised at how manageable it is.

And because we’re an independent imaging center, you’re not waiting in a hospital queue. Most patients are in and out in under 30 minutes.

What Sets RAVE Apart for Mammography in Sarasota

3D Tomosynthesis Technology: Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) builds a 3D image from multiple low-dose X-ray slices, letting your radiologist examine breast tissue layer by layer — eliminating the overlapping tissue problem that causes false positives on traditional mammograms.

SmartCurve Comfort System: The curved compression paddle conforms to the natural breast shape. Less discomfort, same diagnostic quality.

Fewer Callbacks: Studies show 3D mammography reduces callback rates by 20-40%. Fewer callbacks means less anxiety and fewer unnecessary follow-up appointments.

40% Higher Invasive Cancer Detection: Clinical evidence shows 3D mammography detects approximately 40% more invasive breast cancers than traditional 2D mammography alone.

Board-Certified Radiologist Reads: Every mammogram is interpreted by one of our eight fellowship-trained radiologists.

3D Screening Mammography

Your annual screening mammogram, upgraded. We use digital breast tomosynthesis alongside standard 2D digital imaging. Recommended annually for women starting at age 40, or earlier based on individual risk factors. Typically 15-20 minutes total.

Diagnostic Mammography

If you’ve had an abnormal screening result, feel a lump, or have breast concerns, a diagnostic mammogram provides targeted imaging of the area in question. Bring prior mammogram records if you have them — our radiologist will review them alongside your current images.

Breast Ultrasound

Used alongside mammography to better characterise suspicious areas, evaluate palpable lumps, or further assess dense breast tissue. No radiation, no preparation needed.

Breast MRI

The most sensitive breast imaging tool available. Typically recommended for high-risk patients — BRCA mutation carriers, strong family history, or very dense breast tissue. Requires contrast and takes 45-60 minutes.

Image-Guided Breast Biopsy

When a mammogram or ultrasound reveals a suspicious area needing tissue sampling, image-guided biopsy allows minimally invasive collection without open surgery. We coordinate closely with your referring surgeon or oncologist.

What to Expect During Your
Mammogram at RAVE Sarasota

Before Your Appointment

  • No deodorant, antiperspirant, lotion, or powder on exam day — they can interfere with imaging
  • Wear a two-piece outfit so you only need to remove your top
  • Bring prior mammogram images from other facilities if available
  • Routine screenings often don’t need a referral, but some insurance plans do. Call to confirm
  • Arrive 15 minutes early

During Your Mammogram

Our technologist will position each breast on the imaging platform one at a time. The SmartCurve paddle compresses the breast for a few seconds per image. Most women describe it as mild pressure rather than pain. Full appointment: 20-30 minutes from check-in to exit.

After Your Mammogram

Resume normal activities. Radiologist review and results to your physician within 24 hours. You can also access your report through our patient portal. If follow-up is needed, our team contacts you promptly.

Common Questions About
Mammograms in Sarasota

“How often should I get a mammogram?”

Most major organisations recommend annual mammograms starting at age 40 for average-risk women. If you have a family history, BRCA mutation, or other elevated risk factors, your doctor may recommend starting earlier or adding additional screening.

“I have dense breast tissue. Does that affect my mammogram?”

Yes. Dense breast tissue can mask lesions on traditional 2D mammography. 3D tomosynthesis examines tissue layer by layer rather than one overlapping flat image — it’s especially valuable for dense breasts. Breast ultrasound or MRI may also be recommended as a supplement.

“Do I need a referral for a mammogram in Sarasota?”

Women 40 and older often don’t need a referral for routine screening, though some insurance plans require one. Diagnostic mammograms typically do require a physician’s order. Call 941-488-7781 and we’ll figure it out.

“Is 3D mammography covered by insurance?”

Most major plans including Medicare now cover 3D mammography for annual breast cancer screening. We verify your coverage before your appointment so you know your out-of-pocket cost upfront.

“Will I get results before I leave?”

Not typically. Your radiologist reviews the images — that review usually happens within 24 hours. Results go to your physician and are also available through our patient portal. Anything urgent is communicated same day.
