What is a CT Scan?

CT Scan sometimes called CAT scanning is a painless and a non-invasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. CT uses a very thin special X-ray beam to produce detailed, cross sectional views of the area being studied. The images can be examined on a computer or printed. CT is often the preferred method of diagnosing causes of pain and many different forms of cancer. CT of the internal organs, bone, blood vessels and soft tissue provide greater clarity than conventional x-ray exams.

If you have been a heavy smoker, then you are at significantly increased risk for developing lung cancer. CT can find small lung nodules that might be cancer before they can be found by any other test. If you are between the ages of 55 and 77, then national experts recommend you undergo low dose CT screening for lung cancer. These recommendations come from many groups of medical experts including the National Lung Screening Trial Research Team, the American College of Chest Physicians, and American Society of Clinical Oncology.

How is the Procedure Performed?

You will be lying flat on a table usually on your back, stomach or on your side.

The table will move slowly through the machine as the actual CT scanning is performed. You may be asked to hold your breath during the exam. The CT exam is usually completed within 30 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions About CT Scans

How long does a CT scan take?
Most CT visits take about 10 to 15 minutes, and the scan itself often takes less than a minute. Exams that use contrast can add a little time for the injection and preparation.
How do I prepare for a CT scan with contrast?
If your exam uses contrast, you may be asked not to eat for a few hours beforehand and to drink plenty of water afterward. We’ll give you exact prep instructions when you schedule. Be sure to tell us about any allergies, kidney conditions, or medications like metformin before your appointment.
Is the radiation from a CT scan safe?
CT does use ionizing radiation, but our protocols keep the dose as low as reasonably achievable while still producing diagnostic-quality images. Your physician has already weighed that small exposure against the benefit of an accurate diagnosis before ordering the exam.
What's the difference between a CT scan and an MRI?
CT is faster and excels at imaging bone, the chest, and urgent conditions. MRI takes longer, uses no radiation, and shows soft tissue in finer detail. Your provider chooses the exam based on what needs to be seen.
