Preparation for Diagnostic Imaging Procedures

Proper preparation is critical to obtaining high-quality diagnostic images and ensuring patient safety. Below are tailored instructions for specific imaging examinations to optimize diagnostic accuracy. Expand each section for detailed protocols.

Ultrasound

Aorta, Abdomen, Retroperitoneum, Renal Vessels Duplex, Hepatic Duplex, Mesenteric Arteries:

  • Nothing to eat or drink 6 hours prior to exam. Prescription medication may be taken with small sips of water.

All Pelvis (even when scheduled with abdomen), Renal/Bladder

  • Drink 32 ounces of water 1 hour before exam, must be finished drinking 30 minutes before appointment time. Do not urinate until your exam has been completed.
CT

CT Calcium score

  • Do not consume any caffeine for 12 hours prior to your exam.

CT scan with IV contrast

  • Do not eat anything at least 3 hours before your exam and drink only water. Please drink at least 50 ounces of water prior to your appointment to hydrate.  You are not required to keep your bladder full.

CT Enterography

  • You will need to pick up 2 bottles of Breeza from any rave location the day before your appointment. On the morning of your exam, no food or drink (except water) 4 hours prior. You will drink the first bottle of Breeza 2 hours prior to your appointment and the second bottle 1 hour prior. A third bottle will be given upon arrival, (Breeza serves to distend the bowel and marks the bowel for clear identification during the imaging study).
Mammography
  • Please do not apply deodorant, antiperspirant, powders, lotions, creams, or perfumes under your arms, or on or under your breasts.
  • If your prior mammograms were taken at a different facility, please obtain your images and bring them to your appointment. This allows our radiologist to do a comparison and give you a more complete reading.
MRI

MRI Prostate

  • Please refrain from sexual activity during the 48 hours prior to your appointment. The night before your MRI you will need to take two gas-x tablets. Please remember no food 4 hours prior to your appointment. Please hydrate with water a few days prior to your scan and the day of the exam. This will be helpful for IV access with the contrast that is ordered for your exam. all jewelry/metals must be removed prior to the exam. You will be asked to change out of your street clothing.

MRI Breast

  • Drink only water. Please remember no food 4 hours prior to your appointment. Please hydrate with water a few days prior to your scan and the day of the exam. This will be helpful for iv access with the contrast that is ordered for your exam. PetScan

Pet Scan PSMA

  • Please drink plenty of water the day before and the day of your exam.

PetScan Skull to thigh and whole body

  • Please have nothing to eat or drink (except water) 6 hours prior to your scheduled appointment. if diabetic (4 hours). no mints or gum etc. avoid strenuous exercise and foods containing sugar or carbohydrates for at least 24 hours prior to your exam. No caffeine, decaffeinated, alcohol, or nicotine products are allowed for 12 hours prior to your exam. Our facility is cold so dress appropriately. You should wear loose, comfortable clothing, avoiding metal (no snaps, buttons, zippers). all prescription medications should be taken as directed.

Pet Vizamyl Brain Scan

  • Please hydrate with at least 50 ounces of water prior to your appointment. Our facility is cold so dress appropriately. You should wear loose, comfortable clothing, avoiding metal (no snaps, buttons, zippers). All prescription medications should be taken as directed.
Nuclear Medicine

Hepatobiliary Scan

  • Please have nothing to eat or drink (including water) 6 hours prior to the test. This includes gum, mints, etc. pain medications containing opiates or morphine should be avoided for 8 hours prior to the test. All other necessary medications may be taken with a small sip of water. This test will take approximately 2 hours.

DatScan for Parkinson’s Disease

  • No Prep for this appointment

Bone scan, Parathyroid Scan, Pulmonary Ventilation and Perfusion Scan

  • We encourage you to be well hydrated for your appointment. You may eat and take medications as necessary before the procedure.

Thyroid Uptake Scan

  • Please have nothing to eat or drink (except water) 4 hours prior to your exam. You should be on a low iodine diet for 14 days before this appointment.

Gastric Emptying Scan

  • Please have nothing to eat or drink (including water) 6 hours before your exam. No smoking 6-8 hours before the exam. treatment with prokinetic agents (metoclopramide [reglan], tegaserod [zelnorm], and erythromycin) should be stopped 2 days before the test unless this test is being performed to assess the efficiency of these drugs. medications that delay gastric emptying should be stopped 12-24 hours before the test. These include the following: opiates (demerol, codeine, morphine, oxycontin, percodan, and percocet). antispasmodic agents (bentyl, donnatal, levsin, and robinul), atropine, nifedipine (adalat, procardia), progesterone, octreotide (sandostatin), theophylline, benzodiazepine (valium, xanax), and phentolamine. Please advise, the appointment will take 4 or more hours.

Renal Scan with Lasix

  • You may eat and take medications as necessary before your exam. You need to be well hydrated, please drink at least 16 oz of water 1 hour prior to your exam. If you are taking any diuretics, please discontinue them 24 hours prior to the exam.
Dexa/Dexa TBS
  • Please refrain from taking any calcium supplements 24 hours prior to your appointment. You should wear loose, comfortable clothing, avoiding metal around the waist area (snaps, buttons, zippers).

Required Items for Your Appointment

  • Physician Referral Order: A signed order from your referring physician specifying the imaging procedure and clinical indication.
  • Government-Issued Photo Identification: A driver’s license, passport, or equivalent to confirm patient identity.
  • Prior Imaging Records: If applicable, bring CDs, films, or reports from previous imaging studies performed at other facilities to support diagnostic continuity and comparison.
