CT Scan in Sarasota: Fast, Accurate Imaging at RAVE Radiology

A CT scan in Sarasota is one of those things that often needs to happen quickly. Your doctor ordered one, and now you need to find a place that can fit you in, do it right, and get results back fast. That’s exactly what RAVE Radiology on Cattlemen Road is built for.

We use advanced low-dose CT technology, and every scan is read by one of our eight board-certified radiologists, many with fellowship subspecialty training. Same-day and next-day appointments are available when medically necessary.

What Is a CT Scan and What Does It Show?

A CT scan (computed tomography, also called a CAT scan) uses a series of X-ray images taken from multiple angles, combined by a computer to create detailed cross-sectional pictures of your body. It can show bones, blood vessels, and soft tissues in far more detail than a standard X-ray.

Doctors order CT scans for a wide range of reasons: checking for internal injuries after an accident, evaluating chest or abdominal pain, looking for signs of infection or cancer, guiding treatment planning, and monitoring known conditions over time. CT is also used for CT angiography (CTA),  imaging blood vessels to detect blockages or aneurysms.

It’s fast. Most CT scans take less than 15 minutes from start to finish. That speed, combined with the detail it captures, makes it one of the most commonly ordered imaging studies in medicine.

Our Sarasota location also offers MRI, ultrasound, and bone density scans  so if your doctor needs multiple types of imaging, you can often coordinate everything in one place.

Low-Dose CT: What That Means for You

One of the questions patients often ask is about radiation. CT scans do use X-ray radiation, and that’s a fair concern. RAVE Radiology uses low-dose CT protocols designed to produce the diagnostic quality your doctor needs while minimizing radiation exposure as much as possible.

The evidence behind low-dose lung CT screening is substantial. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), in its recommendation statement published in JAMA (Krist et al., 2021), recommends annual low-dose CT screening for adults aged 50 to 80 with a 20 pack-year smoking history who currently smoke or quit within the past 15 years, citing moderate certainty of meaningful benefit in reducing lung cancer mortality. That’s a meaningful expansion from earlier eligibility criteria, and it’s why awareness of this screening option matters for Sarasota residents.

A separate 2024 open-access review in the NIH PMC database (Dudhe et al., Cureus, 2024) found that modern radiation dose optimization protocols — including the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle combined with advanced flat-panel detector technology — allow CT facilities to significantly reduce patient exposure without compromising diagnostic image quality. That’s the standard we hold ourselves to at RAVE Radiology.

What Happens During Your CT Scan Appointment

When you arrive, our team will review your health history and go over any preparation instructions specific to your scan. Some CT studies require oral or IV contrast, a dye that helps certain structures show up more clearly on the images. If contrast is needed, you may be asked to fast beforehand, and our scheduling team will tell you this ahead of your visit.

The scan itself takes only a few minutes inside the machine. The CT scanner is open on both ends, so it doesn’t feel enclosed the way an MRI might. You’ll be asked to hold still and in some cases hold your breath briefly for certain image sequences. That’s about it.

Results are reported by our board-certified radiologists and sent to your referring physician, typically within 24 to 48 hours. You can see the full details of our CT scan services at our Sarasota location on our dedicated page.

Frequently Asked Questions About CT Scans in Sarasota

Q: Do I need a referral to get a CT scan at RAVE Radiology in Sarasota?

Yes. CT scans at RAVE Radiology require a physician’s order. If your doctor has already given you one, just call us at 941-488-7781 or book online to schedule. We’ll confirm your insurance and any prep instructions when you call.

Q: How should I prepare for a CT scan?

Preparation depends on the type of CT scan ordered. For most basic CT studies, no special prep is needed. If your scan involves contrast dye, you may need to fast for 4 to 6 hours beforehand, and we’ll ask about kidney function and any prior reactions to contrast. Our team will walk you through everything specific to your exam when you schedule.

Q: Is low-dose CT safe?

Low-dose CT protocols are designed to reduce radiation while still producing diagnostic quality images. The benefit of an accurate diagnosis generally outweighs the small radiation exposure involved. Your referring physician has determined that CT is appropriate for your clinical situation. If you have specific concerns, talk with your doctor or ask our team when you call.
